If you’ve never been to any of the countries in the Arab world, Jordan is a great place to start.
The people are friendly, the food is fantastic, the scenery is unforgettable and–of course–you have access to one of the world’s great historic sites, Petra. Touring Petra as soon as it opens in the early morning is the way to go, not only because the temperature is still cool but you can luck out and get the place all to yourself. Most of the visitors come by tour bus, and they aren’t there yet at 6 am.
Plus, Jordan is a safe, tranquil nation in the midst of an often tumultuous part of the world, while providing a quintessentially Middle Eastern experience with opportunities for all the right kinds of adventure travel. We chose to rent a car and drive down the amazing King’s Highway on our way to Petra. The views are spectacular, rivaling any vistas in the American Southwest.
We took our kids along for an unforgettable cross-cultural worldschooling experience not to be forgotten…including a Bedouin camp.
